Personal Care Product Ideas

To make it a tad easier to start using less-toxic personal care products, you may consider incorporating some of the items below into your regimen. Dr. Alexander personally used the items marked with an asterisk.

Toothpastes: Boka Nano Hydroxyapatite, Himalaya

Botanique (Whitening/ Complete Care), *Davids Whitening+Antiplaque

Mouthwash: TheraBreath, Trace Minerals Concentrace Mineral Mouth Rinse, Tea Tree Therapy Mouthwash, *GruNanda Concentrated Mouthwash (Must dilute but in a glass bottle which is great!)

Sunscreen: Black Girl Sunscreen, Babo Botanicals Sunscreen (may leave slight white cast on darker skin tones; can cover with makeup if desired)

Kitchen Options

Pots and pans / cookware: Stainless steel (*Cuisinart, All-Clad, Made In, Le Creuset), cast iron (Lodge, Le Creuset, Victoria), titanium, & PFAS-free ceramic pans/skillets (look for options based on your budget and cooking frequency; lots of options coupled with mixed consumer reviews regarding value and questionable manufacturing; visit my website for future suggestions)

Dishware (plates/bowls/cups): Duralex (tempered, lead & cadmium-free glass), Corelle [Winter Frost White Collection and modern (after 2010) & minimally designed Vitrelle only; vintage versions may contain lead], Libbey (lead-tested glass dinnerware), 100% stainless steel dinnerware sets (stainless steel service sets).

Coffee mugs/Water bottles: Duralex tempered glass mugs (lead-free glass), stainless steel insulated mugs and water bottles (Klean Kanteen, Hydro Flask).

Dishwasher detergent & Dish soap: Seventh Generation Dishwasher Detergent powder, Palmolive Ultra Pure+Clear, Sal Suds

Dish cleaning cloths: Swedish dishcloths (made with cellulose & cotton), organic cotton dishcloths/GOTS-certified cotton cloths (many options); also consider sisal, ayate, loofah, or hemp (look for 100% biodegradable options)

Bamboo Paper Products: Reel, Repurpose, Betterway (These are good options for toilet paper too.)

Water: For drinking – Visit www.ewg.org/tapwater to figure out which contaminants are present in your area and choose an appropriate filtration system. For hygiene – Consider Sprite shower and bath filters (Verify if other contaminants are present in municipal water systems and choose what is best for your area accordingly.) Reverse osmosis systems for the whole home may waste water but would also remove contaminants most effectively.

Laundry Options

Clothing: Organic cotton (GOTS is preferred; although 100% cotton is best, a little spandex, elastane, or other material blended within the fabric under 10% for stretch is better than other completely synthetic options; more good, cute, organic clothing options available – e.g. Pact, Quince, MATE, Under the Canopy); use caution with recycled synthetic fabrics (OEKO-TEX certified okay); Also linen, hemp, wool, and silk are good; may consider Tencel, from wood pulp, as a newer fabric alternative.

Shower curtains (non-toxic / PVC-free): GOTS or organic textile shower curtains (Bean Products, Lifekind, Quince), PEVA/EVA PVC-free liners (PVC-free liners are made from other plastic, so VOCs could be released; only use if a plastic liner is required).
